What is Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF)?
Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF) is a variable surcharge used by freight providers to reflect changes in fuel prices. Rather than increasing base freight rates each time fuel changes, carriers apply a separate surcharge percentage that moves up or down over time. This ensures freight surcharge NZ costs remain aligned with global diesel fluctuations without constant contract renegotiations.
How is FAF calculated?
Each carrier may use a different method, but monthly FAF rates NZ are generally based on the difference between a base fuel price and the current diesel price. That change is then converted into a percentage added to freight charges NZ.
Base Fuel Price
The agreed starting fuel cost defined in your service contract. It acts as the anchor point for all future surcharge calculations.
Current Fuel Price
The prevailing market price of diesel, usually monitored monthly through official reference sources or carrier indexes.
Resulting FAF %
The final percentage added to your base freight cost, reflecting the real-time gap between base and current fuel prices.
